"Armed Serenity 2008" by Nutnfancy, Part 2

PART 2 of 2: A tactical shoot with Nutnfancy and friends out in 15º to 20ºF snowy conditions at a Law Enforcement range, western US. This shows the nuts and bolts behind my synopsis video Armed Serenity. Putting a shoot like this together is a lot of work requiring much attention to detail (especially in these conditions), safety, logistics, clothing, tactical gear, and consideration for various experience levels. Primary purpose was to have fun with friends and to make a good memory with them. The secondary purpose give exposure to combat-oriented shooting to reveal weaknesses in technique and systems so they can be improved. The course of fire is representative of many other goods ones that are run at this excellent range. As shown, the course consists of 3 rds shot at each of two bad guys targets in the kneeling and standing positions. These shots are taken after a run at 50, 25, 15, and then walking 7 to 3 yards. Video covers more specifics. The cold conditions and bad ammo choked some 10/22s but time was short so we had no time to troubleshoot; we just transitioned to our tactical carbines. Scoring system was simplified later (see Part 2) and is a necessary part of the course: competition, running, and timing all help build some beneficial stress levels for practice (and it makes it funner!). The result was excellent carbine training that rewarded speed and accuracy. Goal was to achieve the lowest time for the shoot. Any shots outside of the humanoid bowling pin kill ...

"Children of the Gun" by Nutnfancy, Part 2

Don't count on a lockbox or gun safe to keep your child safe. That system fails to establish the real foundation of safe gun handling for your child: TRAINING. A responsible parent or guardian who has made the wise decision to increase their personal safety and self-reliance by inclusion of a gun in the domicile, has the responsibility to teach everyone under that roof about its existence and safe operation. Failure to do so and an over reliance on Protectionist-advocated and mandated "lockup" solutions could endanger your child. The lock-up "solution" can be thwarted by your child, you can forget to close it, and it only covers one location: your home. More damaging is that you are leaving your child in a state of ignorance. And by just locking up the gun (or hiding it), you have created a TABOO that the child will investigate when you are gone. De-fuse that problem head on by committing to a lifetime of fun but purposeful firearms training. And this training can and should begin when they are young. It establishes a mindset of responsibility that can transfer to other "dangerous things." It does take commitment and work (as do all good things) but the rewards are great. I set forth several the Nutnfancy TENETS OF TRAINING for your consideration in this process: downfalls of following conventional wisdom and political correctness, the guiding force of your VALUE system, how competence and confidence should be your training goals, how your parenting style will affect the ...
